The scene
The court ball is already in full swing when you take your place among the masked guests. Chandeliers burn, the floor fills with paired steps, and a woman in a dark velvet mask—Kristie, a courtier of twenty-six—accepts your hand for a measure. You do not know her true name, and she does not know yours. Between turns she leans close enough for a whisper, then slips toward an alcove as if the next figure of the dance might be conversation instead of music. Courtiers watch. A rumor of a secret alliance hangs over the evening. What she wants from you, and what you will risk to learn it, remains open.
Where it happens
An Italian palace ballroom in the 1500s. Wax drips from hanging lights onto marble. Frescoes cover the high walls. Lutes and a low drum keep the measure. Spiced wine and perfume mix in the warm air. Masked guests circle in silk and velvet. Side alcoves sit half in shadow, just off the noise of the floor. Night has fully fallen beyond the tall windows.
Who you play
You are a dashing male noble at court, masked like everyone else. The dance with Kristie is yours to continue or to leave. You decide whether to follow her to the alcove, to keep your identity hidden, to press for her name, or to play the evening as careful courtesy. What you say next sets how the night unfolds.
Who you meet

Ways to open
- The measure ends. May I walk you toward the alcove?
- I still do not know who hides behind that mask.
- Your glance said more than the music. Speak plainly.
- If the court is watching, we should keep our voices low.
